Since I was a boy starting out in the Bronx not too far from Yankee Stadium, I have embraced the history and lore of Baseball. Alas, I was never able to make the Big Leagues (though I played some form of the game into my 50's, finishing with two seasons of 1800's Vintage Baseball for the now defunct Bridgeport Orators), but I still loved exploring its rich history.
It was this passion that led me to become a columnist for Sports Collector's Digest, the Bible of sports memorabilia collecting, in 1993. Since then I have produced over 100 features for SCD, most of them centering on the history of America's classic ballparks. Other columns have been devoted to such diverse topics as player interviews, the evolution of uniforms and equipment, and the joys of Spring Training. My association with SCD has allowed me to meet or speak to some of America's greatest sports heroes, such as Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams. I'm proud to say that copies of my work may be found in the archives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY, to which I possess a lifetime pass.
My Baseball writings have led to some interesting ventures. First, my collection of baseball memorabilia has transformed my basement into a mini-museum, featuring stadium artifacts such as seats, signs and turnstiles; hundreds of uniforms, gloves and bats dating back to the late 1800's; and various autographed balls, baseball cards and ephemera. In fact, in 2000 the Connecticut Post published a feature article on the collection, and TV News Channel 12 (CT) conducted an entire morning's weather updates from my downstairs.
I've also had the good fortune to make guest appearances on numerous radio and television programs to discuss Baseball History and Collecting. Most notable the cable shows Personal FX and Treasures in Your Home (host John Burke) and Antiques Show and Sell (host John Bruno).
It is my hope to continue writing about Our National Pastime, whether it be from the historical end or- perhaps- a future novel. I'll keep you posted!
